A modern obsession has developed with fats, and there is an emphasis upon a “low-fat” diet, but there are many misunderstandings about the different types of fats, their impact upon health and their role in therapeutic nutrition. See more on this in Low Fat is Fattening.

Natural fats include fatty acids, saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated.

Processed (hydrogenated) trans fats as found in margarine, vegetable shortenings, and sythentic spreads, should not be included in the diet under any circumstances. They are toxic substances and any food that lists "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" should be avoided. See our Butter v Margarine article for more on this

Saturated Fats

Lard and butter are saturated fats, they are solid in form when stored at room temperature. They are are natural and good for you. If you are lucky enough to be able to obtain raw butter from your local farm, this has even more benefits.

Although palm and coconut oil, are plant fats, they are also saturated fats, unlike most other plant fats, which are polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats. Coconut oil is especially good, and key for vegans.

Monounsaturated fats

These are important and found in healthy foods such as nuts, avocados, olive oil grapeseed oil, groundnut oil, peanut oil and sesame oil. Omega-9 (oleic acid) is a monounsaturated fat.

Polyunsaturated fats

PUFA’s cannot be made by your own body and are therefore need to be included in your diet, these are often referered to as Essential Fatty Acids. This is why fresh fish first and foremost, and then a quality Fish Oil supplement if needed is so important.

Essential Fatty Acids play an essential role in every single process in your body, so it is no wonder that they can act so well to prevent the common diseases of the Western World. They also help the absorption of vitamins from your food.

Polyunsaturated essential fatty acids fall into two groups;

Omega-3 (linolenic acid) – fish oil being the best source
Omega-6 (linoleic acid) – found in vegetable oils and cereals

Omega-3 as in Fish Oil produces two further Essential Fatty Acids in your body

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)

Fish Oil provides a rich source of Omega 3 and is known to increase tissue EPA levels ten times more efficiently than other sources of omega-3, it is therefore the preferable source. However Hemp Oil, is a credible alternative for vegetarian who do not wish to consume fish.

For health support , a daily intake in the region of 650 mg of EPA and DHA is recommended
