Stop or Give Up? And Stoptober Nutrition

Department of Health initiatives are often riddled with issues.  For example involving companies such as Kellogs and Coca Cola in Government food policy is a recipe for disaster!

But as initiatives go, we really quite like Stoptober.  It's a natty concept, and for once, uses the power of the positive to deliver a fantastic message. In terms of doing a good job of helping people improve their health, it's basically a thumbs up from us!  So a third of the way through the month, we thought we'd take a look at some issues.

Stopping or Giving Up?

When it comes to quitting smoking, or alcohol, overeating,  or just stopping certain foods, it is typical to talk about "giving up".  From the outset, this gives us the idea something will be MISSING, or lost.  Before even starting, the mindset is a negative one!

It is very similar when we think about "losing weight" ... losing is such a negative phrase.  It's about something missing. Or the other option - losing in terms of not being successful.  Thinking of slimming instead of losing weight is so much more effective.

There is so much to gain when we decide to improve our health... longer life, better self esteem, more energy, more money, more motivation, more fun, more enjoyment, the list goes on and on.

So "Stoptober" frames in just the right way.  STOP is so much better than give up!

How to Stop?

When it comes to smoking, there are many methods. And what works for one, may not work for another.

The Stoptober initiative does encourage the use of patches and similar.  This is absolutely fine if it suits you.  However you do it, just get it done, your life will be all the better for it.  But there are alternatives out there.

We feel very strongly that being pushed and pulled from nicotine company, to pharmaceutical company in the form of patches, all in the name of miilions of pounds of profits, can be very problematic, and make the process more difficult than it needs to be.

Step one is a decision.  A simple decision that you want more out of your life.  And if you have really,  truly made that decision, then no patch is required! By applying a patch, you are immediately puttng yourself in that "giving up" scenario.  You are replacing something, with something else. Inevitably this creates a mindset that something is missing.  But in truth, there is nothing, absolutely nothing you are giving up or sacrificing, but you will only gain so much.

We are conditioned throughout life that stopping any habit is dificult, especially smoking. And yes, it can be.  It can also be easy, and fulfilling and joy IF you let it be.  And many people find they experience, little if any physical symptoms when they get the mind set right first.

“Do, or do not. There is no ‘try.’”

OK, we admit it, this is a quote from fictional character Yoda, but when it comes to summing up this point, it really does sum it up beautifully!

We promise you from personal experience of staff, and many of our customers that it CAN be easy.  If this sounds far fetched we encourage you to buy yourself a copy of Allen Carr's (no, it's not the comedian) "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking", and if needed, the second, longer book, "the Only Way to Stop Smoking".  The method has also been applied to alcohol if this is something you are stopping for Stoptober and need some extra focus.

Nutrition for Stopping

Nicotine is a poison.  So the sooner you can flush it out of your system the better. Opinions vary on how long it takes to fully remove nicotine from your system, with 24hrs to 72hrs being the typical view.

Make sure you enjoy plenty of water.  Add fresh lemon juice to cleanse even more thoroughly.   Lemon juice in warm water in the morning really supports good liver health, and this is so important for removing waste products from the body.  Ideally use a straw to protect tooth enamel.

If you have a juicer, some juiced vegetables would be fantastic in the first week or so.

Some schools of thought believe that oats will help reduce cravings (IF you experience these, and this is absolutely not a given if you get your mind set right first).  Either way, good quality rolled oats are fantastic to cleanse the digestion and soak up toxins, so why not add these for breakfast for a week or two, it will only help.

Get moving! This will help your circulation, and help flush the system quicker.  It will also keep you busy as you get used to this new, healthier way of living.

On the supplement side, first and foremost, we recommend Zell Oxygen.  Not only will the B vitamins help flush your system, but the Zell will help you maintain balance and calm in those all important first few days.  So this would be the foundation supplement that will give you the best possible support.  Designed by a Nobel Prize winner, this is a supplement that really transforms lives.

And although not necessary, but because nicotine massively depletes vitamin c in the body, you may like to add the Acerola and Rosehips, being totally natural and food state vitamin c as opposed to synthetic ascorbic acid, it is the best you can buy.

More Holistic Support

You may find complementary therapies such as hypnotherapy and acupuncture helpful.  And meditation may help you maintain a good positive mind set, and it is scientifcally proven to have significant health benefits.

For exercise, the holistic forms of movement such as yoga and tai chi are fantastic for helping the mind as well as the physical benefits.

For positive thinking, there are lots of programmes available on the internet these days, we really like the ones at http://mindvalleyacademy.com - really professionally produced

If you need motivation, one of the best in the world is Tony Robbins, really inspirational when it comes to making changes for the better. And you don't need to go to seminars, there are audio books, and free Youtube videos to help you be successful.   If he is not your cup of tea, and he isn't for many people, there are many other people that can help you find your inspiration to create change.

Create a New Story

Smoking, or drinking or eating too much does not define you.  Choose a new story, you can be whoever you want to be, and everyone derserves the best in life.  Think of all those things you want to do in life and this will help you to leave addiciton behind with a smile.  Your new life will only be better when you stop those habits that are hurting you. Remember to build in some new habits, lots of them if needs be.  Exercise, writing, photography, poetry, cooking, more time with friends, find those things you will have more energy and time for, and put your heart into them.  It will make stopping even easier!
